Reaction floor

1. Overview

  • In 2018, we constructed a reaction floor made of post-tension prestressed concrete (PC) in the Structural Experimentation Laboratory at our Technology Research Center. The concrete used in this reaction floor was next-generation fly ash cement, AFC®, newly developed by Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, and this was its first construction-related application in Japan.

  • The design strength of the reaction floor is 36N/mm2, and, while a relatively high degree of strength and rapid hardening was required due to the introduction of prestress, because this is mass concrete, there was concern about negative effects caused by the extremely high heat of hydration; however, the workability was good, allowing for control of the heat of hydration and the production of absolutely no cracks.

2. Key Features

  • Achieves setting times equivalent to regular cement due to increased initial strength

  • Improved long-term strength stability and durability due to increased long-term pozzolanic reaction

  • Stable air volume due to reduced ignition loss
